Intelligent Design, Creation-Evolution
Resources
Cky J. Carrigan, Ph.D. (July 2005)
Abbreviations: ID (Intelligent Design), YEC (Young Earth-Recent Creationism), OEC (Old Earth-Progressive Creationism), TE (Theistic Evolutionism).
Books:
Behe, Michael.
Revolutionary work that argues for ID by a leader in the ID movement. Forcefully rebuts Darwinism on the ground that it cannot account for the “irreducible complexities” of even the simplest forms of life. This is technical reading, but devastating for Darwinism. This is a good book to give to an atheistic or agnostic Science Teacher or Scientist to help prepare their mind for Christian Theism.
Bube, Richard H. Putting
It All Together. University Press of
Standard work that argues for TE.
Dembski, William, ed. Mere Creation. InterVarsity, 1998.
Collection of articles that advance arguments for ID edited by a leader in the ID movement, but neutral on the arguments between YEC and OEC.
________. Intelligent Design. InterVarsity, 1999.
Sophisticated arguments for ID against Naturalism and Darwinism.
Denton, Michael. Evolution: A Theory in Crisis. Burnett Books, 1985.
Important work that argues for ID against Evolution.
Erickson, Millard J. “God’s Originating Work: Creation” in Christian Theology. Baker,
1998.
Affirms ID by implication and suggests that OEC is the most plausible conclusion at this time. Warns against unwarranted dogmatism by proponents of either YEC or OEC.
Grudem, Wayne. “Creation” in Systematic Theology. Zondervan, 1994.
Affirms ID by implication and accepts both YEC and OEC as valid interpretations of Scripture and scientific observation. Does not commit himself definitively to either position and is sometimes cited as a proponent of one or the other view from both camps. Finds that the arguments from Scripture tend to favor YEC, while the arguments from scientific observation tend to favor OEC. Warns against unwarranted dogmatism by proponents of either YEC or OEC.
Hanegraaff, Hank. The FACE that Demonstrates the Farce of Evolution. Word, 1998.
Introductory book that argues against Darwinism without taking a position on the YEC or OEC question. It suggests a mnemonic devise to help the reader remember the basic arguments (FACE). This would make a good “first book” on the subject.
Johnson, Phillip E. Darwin on Trial. InterVarsity, 1993.
________. Reason in
the Balance: The Case Against Naturalism in Science, Law and
Education. InterVarsity, 1995.
________. Defeating Darwinism by Opening Minds. InterVarsity, 1997.
________. The Wedge of Truth: Splitting the Foundations of Naturalism. InterVarsity,
2000.
Standard works that argue
forcefully for ID and against Naturalism and Darwinism (Evolutionism). Darwin on Trial is a revolutionary work
that is devoted to the best arguments against
Lewis, Gordon R. and Bruce Demerest. “The Origin of the World and Humanity” in
Integrative Theology. Zondervan, 1996.
Affirms ID by implication and suggests that OEC is the most probable conclusion. Warns against unwarranted dogmatism by proponents of either YEC or OEC.
Moreland, J. P., ed. The Creation Hypothesis. InterVarsity, 1994.
A collection of articles advancing the arguments for ID against Naturalism and Evolution, but neutral on the arguments between YEC and OEC.
Moreland, J. P. and John Mark Reynolds, eds. Three Views on Creation and Evolution.
Zondervan, 1999.
Sets forth the arguments for and against YEC, OEC and TE in a very orderly and even-handed way. This is an essential book for Creationists looking for the best, most concise arguments for and against the best biblical options. Contributors Phillip E. Johnson and J. P. Moreland affirm ID and prefer OEC to YEC, but reject TE on the ground that it does not take into account the compelling arguments for ID and against Evolution.
Newman, Robert C. and Herman J. Eckelmann, Jr. Genesis One and the Origin of the
Earth. InterVarsity, 1977.
Standard work that argues for OEC.
Ryrie, Charles C. “The Bible and Origins” in Basic Theology. Chariot Victor, 1986.
Affirms ID by implication and YEC directly. Suggests that OEC is a form of TE that is too dependant on Darwinism.
Sarfati, Jonathan. Refuting Evolution. Master Books, 1999.
Introductory work by an associate of Answers in Genesis that argues against Darwinism. Author is a proponent of YEC. This book would make a good “first book” on the subject.
Van Til, Howard J., Robert E. Snow, John H. Stek and
Creation. Eerdmans, 1990.
Standard work that argues for TE.
Whitcomb, John C. and Henry M. Morris. The Genesis Flood. Baker, 1961.
Affirms YEC. Not devoted to Creation per se, but to Noah’s Global Flood. The arguments it marshals directly impact the system of arguments put forth by YEC.
Woodmorappe, John. Noah’s Ark. Institute for Creation Research, 1996.
Affirms YEC. Not devoted to Creation per se, but to Noah’s Global Flood. The arguments it marshals directly impact the system of arguments put forth by YEC.
